These might help you complete the Keep the Bugs at Bay Block
- Include the policies/procedures/guidelines and information around Keep the Bugs at Bay in the staff induction process/folder
- Offer subsidised or free vaccinations against preventable illnesses e.g. seasonal influenza and whooping cough for staff
- Celebrate positive behaviours by giving stickers to children who follow good hygiene practices
- If you provide food, make sure staff food safety certificates are up to date
- Consistently apply your exclusion policy to all unwell members of your Early Learning Service (ELS) community, including staff
- Role model positive behaviours to children e.g. hand washing.
- Contact your public health unit immediately should your ELS experience an infectious disease outbreak e.g. norovirus or measles
- Always comply with food safety requirements to ensure food and drinks served in your ELS are safe.
- Regularly wash and disinfect all toys, equipment and surfaces in your ELS to prevent the spread of infectious illnesses
- Analyse the information in your illness register and use the information to inform your planning
- If an outbreak occurs, put away all soft toys, books, magazines and papers from common areas; do not use the sand pit and water play areas
- Create your own display of handwashing by taking photos of tamariki from your centre going through the process
